Microneedling or collagen induction therapy (CIT) is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves a device which contains fine needles used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through this process called neovascularization and neocollagenesis, there is improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in hyperpigmentation, scars, pore size, and stretch marks. After the microneedling procedure, peptides are sprayed into the open channels using an air delivery system.
We use the state-of-the-art SkinStylus® MicroTherapy System which can be AUTOCLAVE STERILIZED! Other systems can trap biohazardous fluids inside the device that cannot be removed or sterilized and puts clients at risk of cross contamination. The SkinStylus® Biolock™ cartridge has a unique, patent pending, seven step safety system designed to stop any fluids from getting through the cartridge and into the device. The Biolock™ cartridge is also gamma ray sterilized to ensure client safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin treatment procedure using an electric device in a pen-shaped form.  The pen consists of a disposable cartridge which houses 13 very fine needles with the circumference size of the thinnest acupuncture needles and can go to depths of up to 2 mm.  The purpose of the microneedling treatment is to create microchannels on the epidermis and  mimics a wound injury.  The process of healing a wound injury encourages skin cell regeneration which then leads to the creation of new layers of elastin and collagen fiber.  As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.

How does Microneedling work?

The device glides along the skin while the needles create tiny punctures on the epidermis.  The depth of the needles can be manually controlled in increments of 0.10 mm and can go to a maximum depth of 2 mm. For most age management related concerns a maximum needle depth of 1 mm to 1.5 mm can achieve exceptional results.

What conditions can be treated or improved with Microneedling?

Some of the conditions that Microneedling is known to improve include: mild to moderate acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, skin texture and pore size, and stretch marks.

What to expect during the 1.5 hour service? How is your Microneedling service different?

You will receive more than a simple needling session at Lotus Mind+Body Spa. We believe in incorporating other components for optimal results.

We start with a mini facial with extractions as part of prepping the skin for microneedling.  You can request dermaplaning for an additional cost.  A topical anesthetic (combination lidocaine and prilocaine) is applied on the face and left to absorb for approximately 12-15 minutes.  We then proceed with microneedling. The speed and adjustability of the needles allows for more effective piercing and absorption of skin products. We’ll finish the session with age management peptides which are penetrated using sonophoresis technology. This complete system will provide much better results than microneedling alone.

Is it painful? I’m afraid of needles

Although microneedling is not pain free, you will feel mild to moderate discomfort as the pen glides back and forth on the skin.  Most clients describe the feeling as a mild to moderate scratching sensation, mostly annoying but not unbearable. The one time use cartridge contains 13 very thin needles, much thinner than hypodermic needles and akin to the thinnest acupuncture needles. The topical anesthetic is very effective at reducing the pain.

Are there risks of Contamination?

This risk is minimal, practically zero. We use the SkinStylus microtherapy pen which is the safest pen in the industry using a patent pending seven element safety system that eliminates cross contamination.  Each client will receive a new factory sealed one time use Biolock™ cartridge which incorporates a labyrinth design with absorbent membranes and liquid expelling ports to ensure fluids cannot leave the cartridge.

The Biolock™ cartridge is screw-affixed to ensure that it cannot come off unexpectedly during a procedure and to also snugly seat the cartridge into a removable, aluminum, nose cone. The seated end of the Biolock™ cartridge has a female connector with a silicon gasket that engages and seals off the drive piston of the micro device. In this way, any fluids that could have exited the cartridge would be forced away from the sealed drive piston of the micro device and become trapped inside the nose cone. The SkinStylus® was designed to have the nose cone removed and autoclave (or otherwise) reprocessed after each procedure. The Biolock™ cartridge is the only cartridge available in the market that is gamma ray sterilized which offers true sterility upon initial use.

What will I look like after the treatment?

Most people will notice redness and mild swelling similar to sunburn for approximately 24-48 hours and there may be slight pinpoint bleeding and/or bruising.  Skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two. Full results will take a few months to appear.

What is the down time after a Microneedling treatment?

Inflammation of the skin is very temporary and reduces greatly within a few hours. It may remain slightly pink for up to 48 hours after treatment. Using hyaluronic acid after the procedure can help reduce inflammation, and sunscreen can be used to protect the skin. Makeup use should be limited to mineral makeup.

Can Microneedling be performed on any skin color?

Microneedling is safe to use on all skin types and colors without risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.

How many treatments do I need and how often can Microneedling procedures be repeated?

Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks as needed. Collagen induction requires at least 3 treatments, while scar reduction requires between 3 and 6. Treatments can be spaced apart 4 to 6 weeks, and the number of treatments needed depends on individual cases. Microneedling can be used on all parts of the body (i.e., neck, decollete, arms, legs). Typically results begin to appear after the first treatment.

What are the side effects?

No negative side effects result from microneedling, and none have been seen in the more than hundreds of thousands procedures that have been done worldwide.

What should I avoid on my skin after treatment?

AHAs (glycolic Acid), retinol, acidic or active ingredients should not be used for 2-3 days after treatment to allow for maximum healing. Sun exposure is not recommended and sunscreen is encouraged.

Am I a candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is safe on all skin types and colors because the epidermis is not damaged during treatment. The chance of change in pigmentation or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation is minimal. Skin microneedling can be used on sensitive and fragile areas (eyes, neck, back of hands) that cannot be treated easily with other procedures. Microneedling is not suitable for clients who have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last three months, have open wounds, cuts or abrasions, have had radiation skin treatment within the last year, are suffering from any skin infection, condition, or herpes simplex in the area of concern, are pregnant or breast feeding, have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing.

What are the risks of post procedure infections?

Post procedure infections are extremely unlikely given that the tiny wounds close quickly and the treatment is done under sanitary conditions.
